The Essential Ad Network Glossary: 30 Terms Every Marketer Should Know
Digital advertising comes with its own language. Whether you're new to the space or just need a refresher, this glossary covers the terms you'll encounter most often when working with ad networks like Squren.
Ad Exchange A digital marketplace where advertisers and publishers buy and sell ad inventory, often through real-time bidding.
Ad Network A company that aggregates ad inventory from multiple publishers and makes it available to advertisers. Squren is an ad network.
Ad Tag A piece of code placed on a publisher's website that calls the ad server and displays the appropriate ad in that placement.
Banner Ad A static or animated image-based advertisement placed on a webpage in standard sizes (e.g., 728x90, 300x250).
Bid Floor The minimum price a publisher is willing to accept for an ad impression in an RTB auction.
Bot Traffic Fake, non-human web traffic generated by automated programs. A form of ad fraud. Squren filters bot traffic actively.
Click-Through Rate (CTR) The percentage of ad impressions that result in a click. Formula: (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100.
Contextual Targeting Matching ads to pages based on the content of the page, rather than user behavioral data.
Conversion A desired action taken by a user after seeing or clicking an ad — a purchase, sign-up, install, form fill, etc.
Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) The total cost to generate one conversion. Formula: Total Spend ÷ Conversions.
Cost Per Mille (CPM) The cost per 1,000 ad impressions. The most common pricing model in display advertising.
Cost Per View (CPV) The cost per individual ad view. CPV × 1,000 = CPM.
Day-Parting Scheduling campaigns to run only during specific hours or days to concentrate budget on peak-performance windows.
DSP (Demand-Side Platform) Technology that allows advertisers to buy ad inventory programmatically across multiple sources from one interface.
Fill Rate The percentage of available ad impressions that are actually filled with an ad. A fill rate below 100% means some inventory went unsold.
Frequency Cap A limit on the number of times a specific user will see the same ad within a defined time period.
Geo-Targeting Restricting ad delivery to specific geographic locations — countries, regions, cities, or even zip codes.
IM Floater An ad format that appears as a floating overlay on a webpage, styled like an instant messenger notification.
Impression A single instance of an ad being displayed to a user.
Interstitial Ad A full-page ad that appears between content pages, typically during natural navigation transitions.
Mobile Redirect An ad format that redirects mobile users directly to an advertiser's landing page.
Passback / Fallback An alternative ad that serves when the primary RTB auction doesn't fill an impression.
Popunder An ad that opens in a new browser window behind the current active window. Discovered by users when they close or minimize their current tab.
Publisher A website owner who monetizes their traffic by showing ads.
RTB (Real-Time Bidding) An automated auction system where ad impressions are bought and sold in real time — typically in under 100 milliseconds.
SSP (Supply-Side Platform) Technology that helps publishers manage and sell their ad inventory programmatically.
Token Tracking A system that passes dynamic data values (publisher ID, geography, device type, etc.) through ad URLs for attribution and optimization.
Traffic Quality A measure of how legitimate and valuable web traffic is. High-quality traffic comes from real human users; low-quality traffic may include bots or fraudulent sources.
Whitelist / Blacklist A whitelist specifies the only placements allowed for a campaign. A blacklist specifies placements to exclude. Both are used for optimization and brand safety.
Win Rate The percentage of RTB auctions that a bidder wins. A low win rate may indicate that bids need to be increased to compete for desired inventory.
